On the 3rd of August a Low Vision Talk was held for the residents at Hooggelegen Retirement Village. Sharon Goosen, from Innovation for the Blind, explained that Macular Degeneration is an eye disease that can blur your vision and is caused by aging damage to the macula. The macula is the central portion of the retina. The degeneration doesn’t cause blindness but might cause vision problems. As there is no cure for macular degeneration, Sharon’s expertise extends to using the correct tools and simple changes to the home.
Examples demonstrated, were magnifying tools and placing a yellow film over reading material to enhance the black words. Some of the changes to the home are to paint railings a contrasting color, so it stands out more. There are also various other tools available, for purchase, to make life just a little bit easier.
Sharon explained that she does house calls, to assess and implement changes that will help and can be contacted at Innovation for the Blind.
