The Rotary Club of Worcester, in collaboration with the FNB Foundation, is proud to support Worcester District Health Services through the donation of three BiliCare machines aimed at improving the early detection of neonatal jaundice in newborn babies.

Neonatal jaundice, identified by the yellowing of a baby’s skin and eyes due to elevated bilirubin levels, affects up to 60% of full-term and 80% of preterm infants during their first week of life. While most cases are harmless and resolve naturally, early detection remains critical to prevent complications and unnecessary hospitalisation.

Traditionally, babies suspected of jaundice during postnatal follow-up visits required heel-prick blood tests, with samples sent to laboratories for analysis. This process often delayed diagnosis and treatment.

The newly donated BiliCare devices use non-invasive transcutaneous bilirubin (TcB) technology, allowing healthcare providers to screen infants quickly, painlessly, and accurately using a light meter placed on the skin. This means more babies can now be tested proactively, not only those visibly showing symptoms, enabling earlier intervention and improved health outcomes.

The machines will be utilised at healthcare facilities situated far from Worcester Hospital, including Rawsonville, Touws River, De Doorns and Overhex, bringing vital screening technology closer to rural communities and reducing the burden on families.

This initiative reflects the power of collaboration and a shared commitment to improving healthcare services for the most vulnerable members of our community.

Together, we are making a meaningful difference where it matters most.
