Another meaningful Disaster Relief Grant, initiated by IPP Juanita Wilkinson, has enabled the Rotary Club of Worcester to support an extraordinary organisation making a real difference in our community – STRIVE TO READ.
Following the devastating floods of 11–12 May 2026, essential educational materials including exercise books, stationery, and learning equipment were destroyed. Through this grant, these resources have now been replaced and delivered directly to the STRIVE TO READ programme in Rawsonville, ensuring that learning can continue uninterrupted.
STRIVE TO READ is tackling a critical challenge. As highlighted by PIRLS, South Africa is facing a reading crisis. In many of our communities, children struggle to read and write, often without basic necessities such as shoes, and relying on school feeding schemes for daily meals.
This programme provides a safe, nurturing environment for learners from Grade 4 to 7, focusing on:
- Listening and speaking
- Reading and comprehension
- Spelling and writing
- Critical thinking
Sessions take place four mornings a week, using an engaging, interactive approach where children learn through play, connection, and encouragement. Their philosophy is simple yet powerful:
“Learning through 100% contact time.”
Founded in June 2024, the initiative gained momentum following a collaborative meeting at Stellenbosch University in December 2024, where key stakeholders identified two urgent priorities:
- Supporting parents in caring for their children
- Addressing literacy challenges in schools
The programme launched in April 2025 at Rawsonville Primary and has since expanded to Goudini High School and Lorraine Primary.
